As you have probably heard by now, the Government of Canada has decided it would be a financially wise move to stop producing pennies. The plan is that the penny will be slowly removed from circulation and we'll see our prices start rounding up or down instead.
Before long, @CDN_Penny was being featured on the radio and conversations all over. The initial shock and surprise of being killed off now settled, there's a new mission. To get Canadians everywhere to count out their penny collections and roll them up.
Show Your Roll is a campaign to get Canadians to donate their pennies.
From the website:
"AFTER THE INITIAL GRIEF PASSED, THE 154-YEAR-OLD PENNY REALIZED ITS LAST DYING WISH: TO DO SOME GOOD FOR OTHERS IN ITS FINAL MONTHS. SO GET YOUR CO-WORKERS, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS TOGETHER, AND LET'S MAKE THIS WISH COME TRUE. BECAUSE EVERY PENNY COUNTS, RIGHT?"So, my plan is that over the next week or so, the boys and I will go out hunting, collecting, counting, and rolling pennies. We'll see how many we can get. I don't know if we are going to find $100,000 worth of pennies, but whatever we can find we will roll up to give away.
As a homeschooling mom, I can see 1001 ways that this project will be perfect. Math skills, History lessons, community service, even a potential for business sense as we collect up some pennies. But mostly, it's about serving and blessing others.
The biggest challenge will be that we need to decide who to donate them to. There's so many amazing charities and causes worthy of every penny. It's crazy. I think the best plan is for us to talk about it together, list off some great causes and vote for who we're working towards.
So, here's how you can participate:
Collect up your pennies.
Count them. Roll them.
Take a picture.
Tweet with the hashtag #showyourroll and your picture.
Check out www.showyourroll.ca to see the piles of pennies that other people have been rolling up!
Do you have any special charity or cause that we should consider as we get started on this? Let me know!
